Child Protection
Most Victorian children and young people are adequately cared for and nurtured by their family. It is only when parents or caregivers are unable or unwilling to protect children against significant harm that the child protection network must take up this responsibility.
The broader child protection network, which includes families, the local community, community agencies, professionals working with children, police and government, works together to keep children safe from harm. The Victorian Child Protection Service is specifically targeted to those children and young people at risk of significant harm. Services include:
- investigation of child abuse
- case management and support services for abused children and young people
- placement prevention and support services
- home-based and residential care
- adoption and permanent care (inlcudes local adoption, Intercountry Adoption and Adoption Information and Support Services).
- provision of advice to court
- support services to assist clients in transition to family reunification or independent living
