Assessment of Risk Factors for SIDS and Sleeping Accidents in Families with Infants Under Two Years: Practice Instructions
In All Cases involving infants under the age of two years where protective issues are present Child Protection Workers will discuss SIDS risk factors with parents and ways to reduce these risks. Information about SIDS should also be provided to other responsible adults who act as caregivers to the baby.
When SIDS risk factors are present
Child Protection workers, who become aware that SIDS risk factors are present in combination with protective issues, are to consider a range of appropriate responses based on good practice and professional judgement. Responses may include but not be limited to:
- Referral to Maternal and Child Health Nurse
- Provision of written education material at appropriate reading level
- Direct discussion with the family concerning SIDS risk factors
- Provision of material goods to assist the reduction of SIDS risk factors.
Prior to reunification of an infant with its family, Child Protection workers will discuss SIDS risk factors.
Use of SIDS risk factors in Court Reports.
Child Protection workers will consider including information about SIDS risk factors in reports to court.
