Australia requires that adoption arrangements meet internationally agreed standards such as those set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (external link) and Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. The Commonwealth Government has in 2006 developed a new department within the Family Law Branch of the Attorney – Generals Department in Canberra (external). The Australian Central Authority (ACA) works with ICAS and other states and territories. The ACA is responsible for management and development of Australia’s government-to-government relations with respect to intercountry adoption and for ensuring that Australia responsibly further develops our intercountry adoption programs.
