Evaluation of the School Focused Youth Service - March 2001: Final Report, Literature Review, Best Practice
During the 1980s and 1990s, youth suicide in Australia reached alarming proportions and governments both state and federal sought solutions. The Victorian Government established a Suicide Prevention Taskforce to investigate the issue. One of the findings of the Taskforce was that many factors make a young person at risk not only of suicide but also of drug and alcohol misuse, homelessness, dropping out of school and even violent behaviours.
The School Focused Youth Service (SFYS) was a major initiative in response to the recommendations of the Taskforce. A joint initiative of the Departments of Education, Employment and Training (DEET) and Human Services in partnership with the Association of Independent Schools Victoria (AISV) and the Catholic Education Office (CEO), the SFYS is an innovative and collaborative approach to service development.
